Finding Your Path with Ikigai: A Journey to Purpose
Over the Christmas holidays, I unwrapped a gift that truly resonated with me — a book on Ikigai, the Japanese concept often translated as “reason for being.” As someone who appreciates Japanese culture (I am wondering if Japan might be my spiritual home because the bliss of a public transport system that has an etiquette that frowns upon people who make sounds and no eating on trains - wow - sounds like it could be the place for me), I was instantly captivated. But more than that, the idea of Ikigai — the beautiful balance between what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for — struck a powerful chord. It felt like the missing piece in a conversation I’ve been having with clients (and myself) for years.
So inspired was I that I signed up to become a Certified Ikigai Coach. This isn’t just a professional development step — it’s a calling. I believe Ikigai offers something truly unique to people at a crossroads in life, those who are questioning their direction, seeking more meaning in their work, or simply trying to understand their “why.”
At its core, Ikigai is the intersection of four key elements: what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. When these four areas align, a deep sense of purpose and fulfilment emerges. It’s not just about career choices — it’s about crafting a life that feels meaningful, energising, and aligned with your values. Through guided coaching conversations, reflective exercises, and curiosity-led exploration, Ikigai helps people navigate change and uncover what truly matters to them.
What I love about Ikigai is that it’s not a quick-fix formula. It’s a process of self-discovery rooted in reflection, values, curiosity, and connection — and that’s exactly why it works. In a world that often pushes us to move faster, Ikigai invites us to go deeper.
I’ll be sharing more about my training and how I’m integrating Ikigai into my coaching in the weeks ahead. But for now, if this idea speaks to you — if you’re feeling stuck, at a turning point, or simply ready for something more aligned — know that your Ikigai is waiting to be discovered.
