Identity, Purpose & the Brain – Unlocking the IKIGAI Pathway

Here’s the 5th blog in a series about neuroscience and how I use that in coaching and hypnosis sessions with you.

Have you ever felt stuck in limbo—like life is happening to you instead of through you?

Maybe you’ve ticked all the boxes you were “meant” to tick…but something still feels missing. If so, you’re not alone, and you’re not broken. You’re just not connected to your reason for being. The Japanese call this Ikigai. And what’s fascinating is that your brain is wired for purpose. At ETCH, I draw on both neuroscience and Ikigai coaching to help people rediscover direction and meaning, and the results can be transformative.

The Brain on Purpose

When you feel a deep sense of purpose, your brain doesn’t just feel better—it functions better.

Here’s how:

  • You get a dopamine boost every time your actions align with what matters to you.

  • Your default mode network (often associated with self-criticism and overthinking) quiets down when you’re engaged in meaningful activity.

  • Your motivation circuits light up, increasing focus and persistence.

  • Your immune system gets a boost. Yes, really, studies show that a strong sense of purpose is linked to better health and even longevity.

Purpose doesn’t just feel good. It’s biologically nourishing.

What is Ikigai?

Ikigai (生き甲斐) is a Japanese concept meaning “reason for being.”

It sits at the intersection of four questions:

  1. What do you love?

  2. What are you good at?

  3. What does the world need?

  4. What can you be paid for?

When those four come together, you get a life that feels meaningful, aligned, and fulfilling—not just on paper, but in your bones. But here’s the catch: many people try to “figure it out” with logic alone… while their subconscious beliefs, fears, or habits are pulling in a different direction.

That’s where my approach is different.

Ikigai Coaching with a Neuroscience Twist

At ETCH, I use a 6-session Ikigai Coaching Package that blends:

  • Coaching and guided exploration to clarify your personal answers to the four Ikigai pillars

  • Hypnosis and NLP to work at the subconscious level, shifting blocks like “I’m not good enough” or “It’s too late for me”

  • Neuroscience-based practices to rewire your brain toward greater alignment, clarity, and emotional safety

This approach is especially powerful if:

  • You’re transitioning in life (e.g. post-education, post-retirement, post-burnout)

  • You’ve spent years pleasing others or following the “shoulds”

  • You want to build something meaningful—but feel foggy, doubtful, or overwhelmed

Whether you’re 18 or 68, it’s never too late to align with your true purpose. Your brain is ready. It just needs the right nudge.

Reflection Prompt

Grab a journal or sit with this for a few moments:

When do you feel most alive?

What are you doing, who are you with, and what parts of you are being expressed? That’s not a random moment. That’s a breadcrumb. Follow it.

Want to Explore Your Ikigai?

My 6-session IKIGAI Coaching Package is designed to help you uncover the purpose that’s already within you—and start living from it with confidence and calm.

If you’re curious (or quietly yearning), get in touch. We’ll explore whether this is your next step. No pressure. Just possibility.

Next time: we’re heading into the creative mind—how neuroscience explains creative block, and what coaching and hypnosis can do to free your flow.

Until then,

Your purpose isn’t out there. It’s in you, and your brain is ready to meet it.
