Jung, Midlife, and the Life Quake That Wakes Us Up

Carl Jung once wrote, “We cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning.” He believed that midlife wasn’t a crisis, but a powerful rite of passage- an invitation to look inward, re-evaluate, and realign.

Yet for many of us, midlife doesn’t feel like a gentle nudge. It feels like a quake.

Jung and the Midlife Shift

According to Jung, the first part of life is about ego development- creating identities, building careers, families, and social roles. But something often shifts in the middle years. What once brought certainty now feels hollow or limiting. We may ask:

• Is this all there is?

• Why am I suddenly questioning everything I’ve built?

• Why do I feel restless, anxious, or stuck when I “should” feel successful or settled?

Jung believed this unrest is the psyche’s natural way of prompting growth. He saw midlife not as a breakdown, but a breakthrough- a moment to meet parts of ourselves we left behind in the rush to become who we were expected to be.

Enter: The Life Quake

In modern terms, we might call this shake-up a “life quake”- a period of sudden or gradual upheaval that forces us to question, reassess, and reconfigure. It could be triggered by:

• Career shifts

• Loss or bereavement

• Children leaving home

• A health diagnosis

• Or simply an internal sense of “something needs to change”

These moments feel destabilising, but they are rich with potential. They can crack open the door to realignment with purpose, values, and authenticity-if we know how to navigate them.

The Life Quake Package: Support for Your Midlife Transition

At ETCH, I created the Life Quake package for exactly this reason. It combines coaching, hypnosis, and neuroscience-informed techniques to help you:

• Make sense of what’s shifting

• Reclaim the parts of you that have been silenced or forgotten

• Find clarity and direction for your next chapter

• Restore energy and focus

• Emerge grounded, empowered, and aligned

Midlife doesn’t have to be a crisis. It can be your most powerful awakening.

Jung also highlighted the freedom that can come from this second stage, free of ego. That would be nice eh?

If you feel like life has pulled the rug out from under you—maybe it’s time to stop trying to get “back to normal” and start listening to the deeper message. Your second act can be the most authentic one yet.
