This is the second blog in the series about neuroscience and how (and why) I use it in my coaching and hypnosis work with you.
If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “I know this isn’t logical, but I can’t stop feeling this way,” you’ve already met your subconscious. (Does yours have a name because mine is called Kermit - don’t worry, this is something we’d work through together).
Logic lives in the conscious mind. But emotion, habit, memory, and instinct? That’s all the realm of the subconscious.
At ETCH, I use hypnotherapy and coaching to work directly with the part of your mind that actually drives behaviour. Because if you want to change how you feel, respond, or show up - you need to speak the right language. And that language is subconscious.
Two Minds, One Brain
Let’s break it down. Your brain operates like a dual-processing system:
The conscious mind is logical, analytical, and future-focused.
It makes decisions, solves problems, and sets goals. The subconscious mind is emotional, automatic, and present-focused.
It stores patterns, habits, beliefs, and past experiences.
Here’s the surprising part: Your subconscious is in charge 95% of the time. That means most of your thoughts, reactions, and behaviours aren’t conscious choices, they’re automatic programs. Think of it like this: the conscious mind is the goal-setter… but the subconscious is the goal-getter. If those two are aligned, change feels easy. But if they’re in conflict? You stay stuck. That’s where hypnosis comes in.
Why Hypnosis Works: A Neuroscience View
Hypnosis isn’t sleep, mind control, or waving watches around. It’s a natural, focused brain state, one you likely drift in and out of daily (think: highway driving, daydreaming, getting lost in a book).
In this state:
The critical filter of the conscious mind relaxes.
The subconscious becomes more open to suggestion and new information.
Brainwave activity shifts into alpha and theta ranges, ideal for deep learning, healing, and integration.
This is where real transformation begins. In hypnosis, we can:
Gently update outdated beliefs,
Shift emotional responses, and
Rehearse new, empowering patterns, directly at the level where they’re stored.
And because the subconscious doesn’t distinguish vividly imagined experience from real life, this work creates change that feels natural, not forced.
From Knowing to Becoming
Ever told yourself, “I know I shouldn’t be nervous,” but still felt overwhelmed? That’s the gap between knowing and becoming. You don’t need more information. You need integration—a new neural imprint that replaces the old pattern with something stronger and safer. That’s what hypnosis does. It helps your brain embody the change you consciously want.
Your Turn
What’s one belief, reaction, or habit you’d change, if your subconscious was on board? If something came to mind, you’re already halfway there. You’re aware. Now, imagine how powerful it could be if your whole mind was working with you, not against you.
This is exactly what we do in sessions at ETCH, especially in my “Stop Feeling Anxious” package.
If anxiety has become your default, even when life is “fine,” there’s a reason, and there’s a way out.
Drop me a message if you’d like to explore whether it’s right for you.
Coming up next: we’ll explore what happens to the brain under stress and anxiety, and why it can feel like your logical mind disappears when you need it most.
Until then,
You don’t have to force change. You just have to speak your brain’s language.
