Hypnotherapy & Theraputic Change
Sometimes knowing why you do something isn’t enough to change it.
You may understand your anxiety. Know that the fear isn’t rational. Recognise the habit or pattern you want to change. Know that you’re safe. Tell yourself to stop overthinking.
And yet your mind or body continues to respond in the same familiar way.
That’s often when people become curious about hypnotherapy.
At ETCH, hypnotherapy isn’t something I simply do to you. It is one of the approaches I can use within a wider programme of coaching and behavioural change.
We begin with you — what is happening, what you would like to be different and what may be keeping the current response in place.
Then we decide what might help.
WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?
Hypnosis is a state of focused attention in which you can become deeply absorbed in your internal experience — rather like becoming engrossed in a book, film, piece of music or your own thoughts.
In therapeutic work, we can use that focused attention intentionally to work with thoughts, associations, imagery, emotions and patterns of response.
You don’t become unconscious. You don’t surrender control. And hypnotherapy isn’t about somebody taking control of your mind.
It is a collaborative process in which you remain an active participant.
You can hear me.
You can think.
You remain in control.
You don’t have to be “good at hypnosis”.
And there is no magic switch.
The aim is to create the conditions in which we can work with change differently.
MORE THAN HYPNOSIS
Because sometimes the most useful work happens before we ever close our eyes.
Hypnosis can be a powerful part of the change process, but I don’t believe every problem needs to be approached with one technique.
That’s why coaching and behavioural change form the foundation of my work.
Depending on you, what we’re working with and what emerges through our sessions, I may also draw upon approaches including NLP, EFT/EEFT, psychoeducation, emotional coaching, parts-based approaches, imagery, somatic awareness and nervous-system regulation.
We might spend part of a session talking and exploring, part working practically with a response or belief, and part using hypnosis.
Another session may look completely different.
You don’t have to choose the technique. That’s part of my job.
WHAT MIGHT WE WORK WITH?*
-
When your rational mind knows you’re safe, but your thoughts or body seem unconvinced.
-
Interviews, presentations, exams, sport, difficult conversations or situations where you want your capability to be available when you need it.Description text goes here
-
When something has become an established response even though another part of you genuinely wants to change it.
-
Understanding how you respond to pressure and developing greater awareness, choice and capacity to regulate.
-
Exploring the beliefs and associations that may influence how you see yourself, what you expect and what feels possible.
-
Sometimes a response that once made sense continues long after the circumstances around it have changed.
*You don’t need to fit neatly into one of these categories.
If something is getting in the way of how you want to think, feel, behave or perform, we can start by exploring what’s happening.
ONLINE & IN-PERSON HYPNOTHERAPY
Work with me wherever you are.
I work predominantly online, supporting clients across the UK and internationally through Zoom.
Hypnotherapy, coaching and behavioural change work can all be delivered online, so you don’t need to live nearby to work with me.
If you prefer to work together in person, I also hold regular appointments in Rainham, the Isle of Sheppey and across East Kent, with additional availability in Central London, St Albans and Bournemouth/Poole.
In-person availability varies by location, so please get in touch if you have a particular area or date in mind.
WHY I DON’T OFFER “ONE-AND-DONE” HYPNOTHERAPY
You may feel a significant shift after one session.
Many people do.
But feeling different after a session and creating sustainable change aren’t necessarily the same thing.
I want us to have enough time to understand the pattern we’re working with, begin creating change, discover how that change translates into your everyday life and respond to what we learn along the way.
That’s why I work with clients through a defined programme, rather than approaching hypnotherapy as a collection of isolated treatments.
Our work has a beginning, a middle and an end.
BEGINNING — UNDERSTAND
We explore what’s happening now, what you would like to be different and what may be keeping the current pattern or response in place.
MIDDLE — CHANGE
We work with what we’ve discovered.
That might involve coaching, hypnotherapy, NLP, EFT, behavioural change approaches or other appropriate techniques.
You then take what we’re discovering into everyday life, giving us new information to work with when we meet again.
END — INTEGRATE
We recognise what’s changed, consolidate what’s working and help you take the understanding, strategies and confidence forward independently.
Not one-and-done.
The aim is meaningful change that ultimately belongs to you.
WHAT DOES A SESSION LOOK LIKE?
There isn’t a standard ETCH hypnotherapy session.
We might begin with coaching and exploration. I may introduce an idea or help you understand why a particular response could be happening.
We might use an NLP or EFT exercise, work with imagery or explore how you’re experiencing something in your body.
We may then move into hypnosis and use imagery, suggestion or other therapeutic approaches relevant to the work we’re doing.
You may also leave with something to practise, notice or listen to between sessions.
When we meet again, we build upon what has happened since.
It’s a process, rather than a performance.
WHAT IF I CAN’T BE HYPNOTISED?
This is one of the most common concerns people have before experiencing hypnosis.
People experience hypnosis differently.
Some people feel deeply relaxed. Others remain very aware of their surroundings. Some experience vivid imagery; others don’t visualise much at all.
You don’t need to fall asleep, lose track of time or experience a dramatically altered state for us to work together.
And being able to hear me, think your own thoughts or remember the session does not mean you haven’t experienced hypnosis. Often I use hypnosis conversationally, your eyes are open and you may responding to questions.
If you find it difficult to relax, switch off or follow traditional imagery, that’s useful information rather than a failure.
I am trained, certified and experienced in working with neurodivergence and all that aside, I work with YOU and the best approach for you.
We adapt the approach to you.
YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW IF HYPNOTHERAPY IS WHAT YOU NEED
If you’re reading this thinking:
This sounds like me, but I don’t know whether hypnosis is the right approach…
That’s absolutely fine.
You don’t need to arrive knowing which technique will help.
Start by telling me what’s happening and what you’d like to be different.
We’ll explore it together.
If hypnotherapy seems useful, it can become part of our work. If another approach would be more appropriate, we’ll
use that instead.
You bring the change you want to make.
I’ll bring the toolkit.
Online across the UK and internationally, with selected in-person appointments in Kent, Central London, St Albans and Bournemouth/Poole.
A PROFESSIONAL APPROACH
I work collaboratively and within the scope of my professional training and experience. Hypnotherapy and behavioural change work are not substitutes for appropriate medical or mental-health care, and where another professional or service would be more appropriate, I will say so.
