Calm Within the Storm — How Coaching and Hypnotherapy Support People Affected by Cancer

A cancer diagnosis is more than just a medical moment. It ripples through your entire life, touching every part of your identity, your relationships, and your sense of future. Whether you’re newly diagnosed, mid-treatment, or adjusting to life after cancer, the emotional and psychological impact can be immense.

That’s where therapeutic coaching and hypnotherapy come in, not as replacements for medical care, but as powerful, compassionate complements to it.

Emotional Anchoring During Turbulent Times

Through my work at ETCH, I support people navigating major life events (what I often call “lifequakes.”) A cancer diagnosis is one of the most intense of these. It’s not just the illness itself, but the emotional upheaval that comes with it: fear, grief, anger, identity shifts, and the weight of uncertainty.

Hypnotherapy, particularly light trance and metaphor-based work, helps clients access inner calm and resilience. By using techniques, we can shift internal states quickly, helping clients move from anxiety or dread into grounded clarity. Combine that with building a relationship and using it in a coaching, forward-facing framework and it’s a highly effective, and gentle, approach. And I love it.

Reclaiming a Sense of Control

When cancer treatment involves waiting, appointments, scans, and decisions beyond your control, it’s easy to feel disempowered. Therapeutic coaching helps you reconnect with your agency, even in small, meaningful ways. We work together to set boundaries, rediscover your voice, and tune back in to the version of yourself that isn’t defined by illness.

Clients often say the sessions give them back a sense of self, an anchor amid the storm.

Support Doesn’t End After Treatment

Post-treatment is its own chapter and it’s one that’s often misunderstood or overlooked. Once the medical team steps back, people are expected to “move on,” but that’s often when the emotional processing really begins. The shock, the trauma, the identity shifts, they often all rise to the surface.

This is a time when coaching and hypnotherapy can help make sense of it all, release what’s been held in the body and mind, and gently rebuild a life that includes what you’ve been through but isn’t limited by it.

At ETCH, I work with individuals and groups, offering a safe, non-judgmental space to integrate, grieve, celebrate, and begin again. Sessions are deeply personal and often include guided meditations, visual metaphors (like the sea voyage analogy used in the event by the charitable organisation Sheppey Matters), and practical strategies to navigate what comes next.
