Have you ever found yourself so anxious you couldn’t think straight? Or so flat and detached you felt numb to everything around you? These are signs that you might be outside your Window of Tolerance — a concept I often introduce in my coaching and hypnotherapy sessions at ETCH.
What is The Window of Tolerance?
Coined by Dr. Dan Siegel, the Window of Tolerance refers to the optimal zone of arousal in which a person can function effectively. When we’re within our window, we’re calm, focused, and able to deal with life’s ups and downs. We can reflect, problem-solve, and respond rather than react.
But when we’re outside the window?
Hyperarousal (fight or flight) — You might feel anxious, angry, overwhelmed, or panicky.
Hypoarousal (freeze or shutdown) — You might feel numb, flat, disconnected, or disinterested.
Neurodivergent individuals, those with trauma backgrounds, or anyone dealing with chronic stress often have a narrower window — making it harder to stay regulated in day-to-day life.
How I use this in our coaching sessions
At ETCH, I use the Window of Tolerance as a foundation for emotional regulation. Whether we’re addressing anxiety, performance, motivation, or identity work, this concept helps you to:
Recognise your own patterns of hyper- and hypoarousal
Build awareness of your current state
Use tools (like breathwork, NLP anchors, or hypnotic techniques) to bring you back into your window
We don’t go diving into trauma or stress responses without the right tools. Instead, I help you develop the capacity to return to a place of calm and clarity, where real change can happen.
Why it matters
You can’t think clearly, communicate effectively, or make empowered choices when you’re dysregulated. So before we try to tackle mindset shifts or strategic thinking, we work on helping you stay in your window longer, and expand it over time.
It’s not just about managing meltdowns or shutdowns — it’s about creating a stronger, more resilient internal system so you can live and work more freely.
Want to experience this for yourself?
Whether you’re navigating a period of change, feeling creatively blocked, or just want to feel more . in control of your emotions and focus — understanding your Window of Tolerance could be the key. And you don’t have to do it alone.
